Day 8: Sore & Sorry on the Snow

Today we both awoke sore and sorry, a combination of our non-existent pillows, firm mattress and unprepared ski legs. We slept in til 9:30, which was nice but also not ideal as we missed the free breakfast downstairs. (Won't be doing that again)

We headed out into the snow about 10:30ish and whilst tough at first we got into the swing of it.
I took Sim up to the Col de Loze, the crest of Courcheval and Meribel valleys where I went yesterday. The plan was to ski down to the town of La Tania, however once we got yo the top the wind was howling, the ski and clouds below were grey and the fresh snow was blowing everywhere. So we decided to stay on the sheltered side of the valley in Meribel.
We stopped for a drink and warmth more than anything, as it was freezing!

We then skied over to Mottaret, the upper village if Meribel. Honestly this place us huge, we have yet to even enter the two neighboring valleys. The size of it scares Simi a bit.
We stopped at Mottaret for some lunch, burger, chips and drink for under 10euros, bargain over here. It's crazy how prices vary depending on where you go. Some places it's like 7euro for a coke , others 1.50euro! It's tough as a traveller!
We skied some more but then called it a day early around 3. It was cold and our legs were tired. Thankfully we didn't have to walk the whole way back to the hotel, as we hopped in the free shuttle. It's tough walking a couple if hundred meters in ski boots up hill!
We had a rest before heading out in the late afternoon for a wander if the town. It was now gently snowing and it was pretty in the streets with all the timber and stone chalets, each with stone chimneys in the rooftops.

We wandered down to the town centre where outside the pub a snowboarding rail and jump had been set up and music was pumping. Lots of old Daft Punk and other electronic music was booming out and a pony geezer was on the mic announcing all the boarders and doing running commentary. There's a lit if Brits here, very popular amongst them we've found out.
We then did a little shopping, looking for a beenie for sim. I tried on a few pairs of sunnies however I always ended up looking like the Terminator.
It was now snowing more heavily and the streets lights were on and the town lit up. We both noticed that the town, as indeed many places we've seen in France so far, still have lots if Christmas decorations up. Not sure if it's just laziness or whether they leave them up all winter here, either way it has a nice charm about it.
We strolled back to the hotel and watched some of the Olympics again. Today it was the moguls we were watching and there was a couple of Aussie guys seemingly doing ok.

We ate dinner in the hotel - 20euro each for salad, main, dessert and a pitcher of wine. Pretty good value for these parts. [its so expensive in the mountains]

The meal was very tasty and gave you that hearty home cooked wholesome feeling. The main was a local Savoyard (the Rhone Alp region) dish called "Tartiflette", basically a very cheesy Potato bake with bacon and onions as well. Very creamy but awesome!

Was nice to have a relaxed meal snd enjoy a few glasses of wine for a change (oh wait....that's what we've been doing)
